"Look for thick stone walls that have watched over this port since the 1500s. Sultans built me to guard pilgrims heading to Mecca — find the fortress with cannons still facing the sea."
Aqaba Fort (Mamluk Castle)
Built by the Mamluks in the 16th century, this fort later played a role in the famous 1917 Arab Revolt — the same events immortalized in "Lawrence of Arabia."
"From the fort, walk toward the golden call to prayer. I'm named after the Sharif who led a revolt, and my minaret rises near the seafront promenade."
Sharif Hussein Bin Ali Mosque
Named after Sharif Hussein bin Ali, who launched the Great Arab Revolt of 1916 from this very region of Jordan.
"Follow your nose into the alleys where sacks of cardamom, sumac, and za'atar spill onto the street. Bargain like a local for the best blend in town."
The Spice Souk
Za'atar, a wild thyme blend, has flavored Levantine kitchens for centuries — grab some here, it's exactly what goes into Suhaila's cooking class recipes.
"Nearby, the morning's Red Sea catch glistens on ice. Follow the smell of the sea and the shouting fishmongers to find it."
The Fish Souk
Aqaba's fishing fleet still brings in the day's catch every morning — much of what ends up in Suhaila's Sayadieh comes straight from here.
"End your hunt where fishing boats bob beside pleasure yachts, and the Red Sea stretches out toward four countries at once."
Aqaba Marina
From this spot on a clear day, you can see four countries touching the same gulf: Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
You just walked the same streets our guests explore on the guided Walking Tour and Cooking Class — with a bit of local history along the way.
